Course times:	Friday 8.15pm - Sunday 12.00pm
(Please note that some lecture-based courses have a free period after lunch on Saturday and practical courses include a clearing up session from 2-3pm on Sunday.) Resident learners are expected to arrive in time for dinner at 6.45pm on Friday.

 

Course level: Suitable for all levels.

This course aims to... introduce learners to the delights of stumpwork by using traditional techniques but with 20th century materials. To encourage students to experiment with new techniques and develop individual ideas.

It is for... beginners to stumpwork embroidery or those with previous knowledge who want to learn more. Learners can either use one of the tutor’s patterns or make an embroidery of their own choice.

During the course... learners will learn through group and individual tuition and with the aid of handouts:

 

• Make a head and hands
• Make a decorative lady's hat
• Make a bowler or top hat
• Make a parasol
• Select and use different methods of raising
• Construct component parts and apply them neatly
• Incorporate embroidery and needlelace stitches traditional to Stumpwork

 

 

Assessment will be... learners work will be assessed by tutor review and one to one observation.

By the end of the course… you should be able to:

 

·         Make a head and hands

·         Make a hat and decorate it in different ways

·         Make a bowler and top hat

·         Make a parasol

·         Use embroidery and needlelace stitches

·         Make and apply component parts neatly

 

 

After the course... learners may attend further courses at Missenden Abbey on stumpwork

Please bring:

 

• 1 x 8 inch embroidery ring
• 1 x 6 inch embroidery ring
• A selection of stranded cottons
• Usual sewing equipment

Tutor profile: Kay Dennis is an experienced stumpwork and needlelace tutor who regularly teaches at various colleges, guild branches and private groups around the country. Kay currently teaches City & Guilds stumpwork for the Embroiderers' Guild and has written three books on the subject.
