This course aims to... provide the modern reader with an understanding of the social and historical background to Jane Austen's novels and encourage a more informed appreciation of the author's literary techniques.

It is for... anyone with an interest in late 18th and early 19th Century literature and social history. Some knowledge of 'Northanger Abbey' and 'Persuasion' in particular is desirable.

During the course... informal lectures and discussions will cover the importance of family and income; marriage; how the Georgians spent their leisure time; estate management; the creation of heroes and heroines. Assessment will be... informal, by learners' own self-evaluation.

By the end of the course… you should be able to:

After the course... you might wish to extend your studies in depth of the individual novels and letters. (In 2011, Hazel will offer Pride and Prejudice as a course.)

Please bring... copies of 'Northanger Abbey' and 'Persuasion' would be useful, but not essential. Other textual material will be provided by the tutor. Sensible shoes and clothing for the walk around Bath.

Additional costs: Refreshments on the visit to Bath.
