This course aims to... introduce learners to the basics of abstracting interesting images from the works of the artist Paul Klee, to produce interesting collages of their own which could further be used as inspiration for other projects.

It is for... anyone wishing to know how to go about producing interesting and exciting collage work of their own. This course would suit any level of learner as the aim is to develop on from where you are now. An open mind and lots of enthusiasm are all that is required.

During the course: Main activities will include:

 

• Looking at abstracting areas as starting points.
• How to find them.
• Work on what to include in your collage – e.g. colour, line, shapes etc.
• Scale of the work.
• Small medium and larger pieces.
• Using a range of mixed media to create your collage.
• Achieving balance and harmony in the work.

 

You will be able to use the work either as an end in itself or as a new source for developing further with other techniques.

Assessment will be...   on an individual basis, by tutor observation, discussion and feedback on your work.

By the end of the course… you should be able to:

 

• Look at a piece of the artist's work and select suitable areas to develop into abstract collaged pieces.
• Use a wide variety of mixed media to produce the required results.
• Explore all kinds of possibilities with collage from different starting points.
• Enjoy approaching collage work without the worry of where and how to start.

 

 

After the course... you may wish to follow up with other courses on printing e.g. collagraphs, collaged art books, or other textile courses.

Please bring: Note: As this list is so variable for individuals - please bring a good selection of as many bits and pieces as you wish. You do only need relatively small quantities of things for collage but a wide variety. (Apologies but it goes with the territory!).

Here are some suggestions:

 

• EVERYONE - please bring some pictures, postcards, books or images of Paul Klee's work - we will use some of these as starting points. Also a selection of good quality paper as ground for your collages. A4, A3, A2 and an old roll of wallpaper (for the longer lengths) if you have some - don't worry if not.
• White, black, previously painted papers or handmade papers are also useful.
• Baby wipes (these are useful for clean ups).

 

Other Items:

 

• Sweetie foils, tissue, newsprint, black, silver, gold, white marker pens if you have any of these.
• Small set of paints - either watercolour or acrylic or similar, inks if you have them.
• PVA glue, Pritt stick, craft knife. Paint brushes, small mixing palette, masking tape, cutter or scissors.
• Large darning needle and small selection of threads if you have them.
• Corrugated card, simple white candle, old photos for cutting up, tracing paper, small offcuts of interesting bits of textured fabrics e.g. lace trims, muslin, scrim, voile, buttons, beads etc.
• Wire, string, tags, etc.
• Anything else which you think would be useful for your work!
• SMALL amounts are fine.
• Camera if you have one.

 

Additional costs: There is only an additional charge if paper/card are bought from the tutor - otherwise you may well be tempted by the various stallholders who always have something exciting on offer - so be prepared!

Tutor profile: Maggie Tweed is a contemporary artist and experienced FE tutor in the creative arts. She holds a post-grad Dip Ed. as well as a Diploma in Stitched Textiles and is a member of the Herts Visual Arts Textile Forum and she exhibits regularly as an Open Studios Artist.
