Course level: Suitable for all levels.

This course aims to... encourage creativity and introduce felt making skills to the quilt maker.

It is for... learners who may have some quilting or felt making experience who would like to develop these skills in a new and exciting way.

During the course... learners will explore three related skills; wet felting methods using prefelt and merino wool; dyeing and resist designs on sheer silks; stitching ideas for hand or machine quilting these layers.

Assessment will be... continuous. At every stage we will discuss the possibilities and potential for development.

By the end of the course… you should be able to:

 

• Match colours in wool fibres
• Master the layering and making of wet felt
• Incorporate other fibres and additions to felt
• Create simple design elements with wax and other resists on silk
• Match colours in silk dyes
• Steam fix painted silk fabrics
• Layer felt and silks effectively
• Incorporate other materials
• Secure layers and stitch confidently by hand or machine
• Finish and mount completed work

 

After the course... you might consider further felt making or quiltmaking courses including City & Guilds Design & Craft courses.

Please bring:

 

• Ideas for inspiration, colour theme
• Old Towel
• Cane blind / beach mat / bubble wrap 24" approx
• Nylon net, approx 24" square
• Broom handle, 24 - 30"
• Baking parchment paper
• Plastic (bag for life) x 2
• Coarse salt
• If available, large frame for silk painting
• Threads for stitching by hand or machine
• General sewing kit
• Silk chiffon and or organza, up to a metre

 

Additional costs: I can supply the following:

 

• Prefelt and merino wool fibres
• Chiffon and organza silk
• Steam fixed dyes for silk
• Wax & wax pot
• Approx £10 -£25 depending on how productive

 

Tutor profile: Barbara Weeks is an experienced and enthusiastic tutor and practising textile artist with work in public and private collections. She exhibits widely and locally with Herts Open Studios.

Unfortunately, children under the age of 16 cannot be accepted into any of our classes unless the course is designed for adults and children learning together.
